Emergency lighting is a critical component in any building, providing safety and guidance during power outages. Why is it important to maintain emergency lighting?
Unfortunately, emergency lights do deteriorate over time mainly the batteries, so testing them regularly is extremely important.
At least two tests should be conducted each year: a full drain down test and a flick test. During the full drain down test, all lights connected to the emergency power system are switched on and run until the battery back-up runs out which checks to ensure that they are in fully working order. The flick test involves quickly flicking switches on and off and checking to see if the lights turn on as they should, allowing any damaged bulbs or wiring faults to be identified quickly. Failing to maintain proper light levels can have serious consequences so it's vital that these tests are carried out at least every six months - failure to do so could be highly hazardous in an emergency situation.
